AtScale Taps Category Visionary Mark Palmer as CMSO to Define the “Deterministic Context” Era for Enterprise AI

AtScale, the provider of the industry’s leading independent semantic layer, today announced the appointment of Mark Palmer as Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer (CMSO). Palmer, a seasoned category creator, joins AtScale during a period of hyper-growth and leadership expansion. His arrival follows the recent appointments of Jay Schuren as President (DataRobot), Luis Maldonado as Chief Product Officer (dbt Labs, Amazon), and Bryan Abou-Rjaily as Chief Revenue Officer (Snowflake).

Palmer is a former CEO, Chief Product Officer, board member, and patent author with deep experience building and scaling category-defining data and analytics businesses. He previously served as CEO of StreamBase, as Chief Product Officer at TIBCO, and is an advisor for Warburg Pincus on AI, data, integration, and analytics. He has also been recognized by TIME as a technology pioneer “who will change your life,” along with honors from the World Economic Forum and InfoWorld. Having worked closely with AtScale as a board member, Palmer chose to step into an operating role at a moment when market timing, product momentum, and semantic category creation were converging.

The AI context challenge is a gap between discovery and computation. Today’s context tools (metadata layers, catalogs, ontologies) and MCP are great at finding data, but not at answering questions correctly. They provide a map of where tables live, but lack the deterministic business logic required to compute an accurate result. Without a semantic layer, AI agents are forced to guess how to join complex tables or aggregate metrics, leading to “confident hallucinations.” AtScale solves this by providing a single source of computational truth, ensuring that both AI agents and human analysts receive the same governed, accurate, and sub-second answers every time. AtScale technology works across all data platforms and data consumers, providing an independent source of truth and context for the next generation of agentic applications.

“Mark doesn’t just market categories; he builds them,” said Chris Lynch, Executive Chairman and CEO at AtScale. “He understands that the AI hype cycle is ending and the ‘results’ cycle is beginning. AtScale provides the accuracy LLMs lack without the chains of vendor lock-in. Mark is the strategist to ensure every enterprise knows that without a universal semantic layer, your AI is just a fancy guessing machine and your data is held hostage by your provider.”

“The rare opportunity here is simple: AtScale is closing the gap between semantic context and a trustworthy, computed answer. That’s why the semantic layer matters so much: it is the engine that makes complex business calculations via a multi-agent AI strategy actually work,” said Mark Palmer, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer at AtScale. “From the board, I watched Snowflake’s investment, the product accelerate, and the market finally wake up to how important context is for AI and analytics. I decided to jump in because the timing is now.”

“AtScale is that engine. Metadata-first approaches tell you where data lives and what shape it’s in; they don’t compute the number your AI agent is about to put in front of the CEO,” Palmer added. “AtScale turns that business context into accurate answers you can make enterprise decisions with. Not a map. Not a catalog. An answer.”

In his new role, Palmer will lead global marketing, category strategy, analyst relations, ecosystem storytelling, and strategic positioning for AtScale. A key focus will be sharpening AtScale’s market position as the governed semantic layer for trusted analytics and AI.

“Mark knows how to name a market, sharpen a message, and turn positioning into momentum,” Lynch added. “That’s what this moment requires.”
