Rather than viewing AI simply as a replacement for human skills, Niemi argues that education can teach students to use emerging technologies thoughtfully while strengthening their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
“AI is not a substitute for learning,” Niemi says. “Students need to understand how to use technology while also developing their own thinking, creativity and ability to evaluate information. The goal should be to strengthen human capabilities, not take them away.”
While Towards Industrial Revolution and Sustainable Growth in Africa is centered on African contexts, Niemi says many of the educational challenges it explores are not limited to one region. Communities around the world face questions about how to provide quality education, develop workforce skills and expand opportunities for people who have historically lacked access to educational resources.
“We have to think about education as something that continues throughout life,” Niemi says. “People need opportunities to learn new skills, understand new technologies and adapt to changes in their communities and workplaces.”
For Niemi, preparing people for the future is not about predicting exactly what tomorrow’s jobs will look like. It is about ensuring people can keep learning as those jobs change.
“The most important skill may be learning how to learn,” Niemi says. “When education gives people the confidence and ability to keep learning, they are better prepared for changes in technology, work and society.”
